Realtors’ New Year’s Resolutions

At the center of every New Year’s resolution is a desire to do better in one or more areas of one’s life. Whether it’s to be healthier, exercise more, increase financial security, take more vacations or read more books, you can be sure someone has made a resolution about it. And they’re nothing new.

The tradition of New Year’s resolutions is thought to have begun in the year 2,000 B.C.E. when the Babylonians observed their new year by crowning a king, paying off debts and returning borrowed farm equipment. The Romans, never ones to pass on a celebration, carried on the tradition and added making sacrifices to Janus, the two-faced god for whom January is named, as part of the observance. In medieval times, knights would renew their vow of chivalry by placing their hands on a peacock. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, resolutions often expressed resolve to avoid earthly pleasures, whereas nowadays, self-improvement, rather than self-denial, is the name of the game.

We asked several area real estate professionals to weigh in and share their 2022 New Year’s resolutions, whether they are personal, professional or a little of both.

This year, I plan to really focus and be intentional … in all aspects of my life. Professionally, I’m very driven – I always work to do the best I can for each of my clients. But this year I’ve set a few career goals that I am working towards. Personally, I’m getting more involved with our local community through volunteer work this year, and I have some big travel plans that I’m putting together with a few friends. I know what I want this year … I know what I need to do to achieve it … and I plan to enjoy the journey along the way.

Belinda’s list of resolutions is a mix of personal and business aspirations for the upcoming year. Belinda’s personal goals include:

• Get fit(ter) – continue exercise routine on my home Tempo machine, do more cardio and, regarding diet, finish reading the book “The Blue Zones Challenge,” and do the four-week plan.

• Finish reading “The Circle Maker” by Mark Batterson.

• Do a little traveling – would love to see more of the U.S. Maybe go to the Grand Canyon.

Her professional goals include:

• Having another banner year listing and selling real estate!

• Help my new agent, Jacquie Wheeler, grow her real estate business.

• Make all of my real estate transactions happy and easy for my clients and customers. I appreciate them so very much and I want them to know that their goals are No. 1 with me, and I want their real estate experience to be pleasant and profitable.

My hope for this year is to soak up all the precious time with my kids who are 13 and 6. I know all too well how fast they are growing and how quickly they will be off doing their own thing. I love this chapter in life.

I currently have a 4.0 in a masters program at Valdosta State University. I have never made straight A’s before and I’m working really hard to graduate with that average!

I have only been selling real estate for a couple of years, which is when repeat business may begin. It would make me very proud to have former clients call me this year because of the attention I have given them in the past as their Realtor. Professionally, new clients would be a lot of fun as well! It is always a beautiful process when I help make that match for people, homes and the beginning of a whole new chapter, whether they are buying or selling!!!

• Work less from home. • Offer to mentor a younger agent.

• Spend more time with my boys. • Plan a trip for my wife and me.

• Go the gym and actually work out. • Work towards shooting par golf. • Meet a new neighbor; be helpful to my neighbors. • Learn something new every day. • Read the Bible every day. • Forgive someone; ask someone to forgive me. • Volunteer for service; increase my giving.

• Be a friend to someone I don’t know; be a better friend to someone that I know well. • Live as if 2022 is the last year of my life.

• Spend less time online and more time on life.

• Get back to basics. Even though “everything has changed,” it really hasn’t. All the old advice still applies: I will get some sleep, show up for the people and things I care about, talk less and listen more, answer phone calls, make my bed, eat breakfast, and maybe brush my hair.

• Just like you’re supposed to stay away from junk food; I’m going to try to stay away from “junk” news. There’s a lot of garbage out there trying to pass for news and information. (Looking at you, social media, or rather, NOT looking at you.)

• Have more fun, fresh air, time with family and friends in the next year than I’ve had in the last two!

(I) don’t have a business New Year’s resolution per se – when we see a change we need to make in the business we make it without delay!

From a personal perspective, my New Year’s resolution is to spend more time with family. Especially in the market we’ve experienced in the last two years it’s easy to find ourselves constantly immersed in work!

Starting the new year after the COVID has been ravaging this country for a couple of years already, made me value more my personal life and professional relationships with my clients and friends. The uncertainty of the country being in lockdowns made people realize how important is to be in an environment and great weather to be able to do more outdoor activities, both personal and professional, which brought many people here to the beautiful Golden Isles. Harris is confirming a trend Realtors throughout the Golden Isles have noticed during the pandemic. A number of people from large urban centers have moved to Glynn County because of the mild climate, outdoor lifestyle, and the reasonably priced homes – compared to those in the Northeast – and being able to do their jobs from remote locations contributed significantly to the trend.

My most important resolution is to build deeper relationships with my existing and my future clients as well as my wonderful family and friends. Also my sons are involved with the business and I am grooming them to best to serve you always as part of The Michael Harris Team.

My goal for 2022 is to slow down and “smell the roses” in all aspects of both my work life and personal life. I am very blessed to live and work in such a special place surrounded by good friends and a loving family. Travel is getting less restrictive, but we still want to make viewing the property easy for parties not in the immediate area, as interest in coastal properties is still very high.

10 tips for successfully sticking to your New Year’s resolutions

The Real Mortgage Rate – Or Is It?

Advertised rates look tempting, but don’t be fooled into thinking that’s the rate you’ll pay. You have to qualify to receive the best rates with excellent credit and work histories. According to  BankofAmerica.com, interest rates are the annual cost of a loan to the borrower expressed as a percentage. The annual percentage rate or APR, is the annual percentage plus other fees, including mortgage insurance, many closing costs, discount points and loan origination fees.  The Federal Truth in Lending Act requires lenders to disclose the APR in advertising and in loan agreements. When you apply for a mortgage loan, the APR will be listed in the loan estimate your lender is required to give you. ConsumerFinance.gov recommends that you get estimates from other lenders for the same loan, so you can compare fees. Compare the loan estimates by looking at page one under loan terms. You’ll find the APR on page 3 under “Comparisons.” APR comparisons are easiest to understand if you’re applying for a fixed-rate mortgage. For adjustable rate loans or ARMs, APR estimates are based on the initial fixed rate period of the loan. While ARMs have rate-hike ceilings, the APR is much higher when interest rates rise during adjustment periods. Lenders can charge consumers high or low interest rates, and they have flexibility in which fees they include or exclude in the APR, so compare interest rates and APRs carefully. If you don’t understand the purpose of any fee, ask your lender to explain.

Jill Wright was the recipient of the “Open Heart & Hands Award” for 2021. She was nominated by her peers for her numerous charitable efforts and positive community impact.

Jill is a “hands-on volunteer” and is very active in the Golden Isles Association of Realtors (GIAR), volunteering for events and serving on various committees. She is also passionate about animal rescue efforts and truly gives back with her time and efforts in so many ways.

“Jill takes a lot of pride in her outreach work and always finds time to support several local organizations….and gets her peers involved! It’s so wonderful to know that a member of our real estate family gives back and makes a difference in our community.”

Connor Burke and Cindy Baird – Rising Star Award
The Rising Star Award recognizes an agent that has joined the real estate industry within the last 24 months who has demonstrated dedication, a positive attitude and has had a exceptionally outstanding listing and sales performance. Two REALTORS share the title of Rising Star Award Winner for 2021: Connor Burke and Cindy Baird.

Cindy sold over $6.65 million this year with 9 transaction sides; her clients sing her praises before, during, and after the transaction is done. Connor Burke, newly licensed in April of 2021, garnered 15 transaction sides and $4.2 million in sales…all while joining over numerous GIAR committees, volunteering in the community, and continuing his real estate education.
